Matter

We learned that there are three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas. We examined an ice cube, melted it, and watched it evaporate.
 Our following lesson covered transparency.
Water is transparent.
Milk is opaque.

Juice is translucent.

Read, Build, Write

I'm trying to have more independent work for Caleb. He loves to join us for group lessons (Latin, science, history, etc.) and often wants to work at the table while Cooper and Noah are working on lessons. I recently used an idea from Homeschool Creations.
Laminated letter tiles

Hard at work

Success! I've printed a number of picture/word cards (visible at the top under "read" and in the container at the bottom right of the photo). Caleb reads the word (often with help), builds with his letter tiles, and then writes it at the bottom.

Math

Our days typically begin with Latin or theology followed by math.
Noah working on some math skills.

Jolly Music lesson...
Caleb keeps beat with his new claves.

I believe they're using yelling voices here.

The little guys are captivated by their French teacher.
Kirsty led a fantastic lesson on leaves followed by several activities and crafts.
The younger group did a matching game with leaves and Usborne identification cards.

Caleb shows off some of his collected leaves.

Noah works on his leaf rubbings.

Thursdays: French and Seeds

We met our new French teacher! This year, we have an older group and a younger group. All of the kids really seemed to enjoy their first lesson of the term!

Mass and Monks

In science, we learned that grams are used to measure mass. The boys used our balance scale for some practice.

We learnt about monks and monastaries in history. The boys had a go at creating their own illuminated letter.

Matter

We've been learning about matter in science.
Liquids change shape.

We focused on solids and discussed various materials. The boys taped samples in their science workbooks. Samples included construction paper, wooden toothpick, metal paperclip, plastic label, cloth, and aluminum foil.

Seed Dispersal

Our first Thursday nature lesson with friends was last week, but I failed to take photos. I hosted this week, and we learned about seed dispersal.
'Performing Seeds' - Drop a little water on wild oat seeds, and they'll dance.
After our lesson, we went on a walk through the nature reserve and hunted for seeds.
Beatrice and Noah are great friends.

Amelia and Caleb tromp through the reserve.

Some of the crew watched the horses.

This is a great group of kids!

We'll return to the Boltons' home next week and will have our first music and French class of the school year.

Line 'em up, Limbourgh brothers, and a little bit of math

Caleb cut out pictures and then ordered them from smallest to biggest.
We read about the Limbourgh brothers and viewed August (Departure for the Falcon Hunt), a painting from a calendar used by the Duke of Berry. The Reid boys each painted a calendar page.
Noah went outside to sketch as his memory of the house and surroundings was not sufficient.

Work in progress

Cooper and Noah do some math skills before beginning their math worksheets each day. Saxon Math provides a 1/4 page size worksheet. I recreated the sheets on card stock and put them in wipe-off envelopes. The boys each have a box to hold a clock, flash cards, coins, etc.
Cooper has been very disciplined with his individual work.

Reid School began last Monday, September 5. Nick will be teaching theology every Monday morning and Latin daily. The boys have really enjoyed having him teach!
7:50 am start time...yikes!

Each of the boys signed their names to our "Scientist" page.

Caleb will be a scientist this year too.
