Math - the daily grind

Math is one of the subjects we do daily. We usually tackle it early in the morning as it's not a favorite of the boys even though they do quite well.

Math

Our days typically begin with Latin or theology followed by math.

Line 'em up, Limbourgh brothers, and a little bit of math

Caleb cut out pictures and then ordered them from smallest to biggest.

 We read about the Limbourgh brothers and viewed August (Departure for the Falcon Hunt), a painting from a calendar used by the Duke of Berry. The Reid boys each painted a calendar page.

Noah went outside to sketch as his memory of the house and surroundings was not sufficient.

Work in progress

 Cooper and Noah do some math skills before beginning their math worksheets each day. Saxon Math provides a 1/4 page size worksheet. I recreated the sheets on card stock and put them in wipe-off envelopes. The boys each have a box to hold a clock, flash cards, coins, etc.

Cooper has been very disciplined with his individual work.

Muscles and Math

We're continuing our study of the human body. This week we focused on muscles.
There's been a lot of flexing going on.  

Cooper worked on estimates and had a little help. 

Preschool, Plagues, and Feet

Caleb has enjoyed using his new numbers workbook.

 After reading our history lesson on the Ten Plagues, we read the account from Scripture. The boys added (and removed) the appropriate plagues throughout the reading.

Noah and Caleb added frogs. 

Cooper uses his feet to measure the hall rug. He then measured in feet using a ruler.

Eager Students

Caleb did a great job on his "b" worksheets yesterday.

Cooper's reading a Magic Tree House book. He'll record the pages read in his Reading Log.

It's all about trees and shrubs in science.

Noah was very thorough with his math work today.

This book is super!!! It's a loaner from a friend. We've moved on from Vivaldi to Bach and read the Bach section of the book.

Patterns and Vivaldi

Caleb worked on magnetic tangrams.

Noah and Cooper created patterns. We used their patterns to practice ordinals: "Which block is in the 5th position?"

 Music was GREAT today! After reading our intro to Baroque music and Vivaldi in our book, The Story of the Orchestra, we read the loaner below.

This was an excellent supplement to our study of Vivaldi. 

Flash Cards

We've finished our math workbooks for the year.
Cooper's reviewing flash cards daily.

Measurements and Nature

We're still in school. I just haven't been posting. We should officially finish the school year next week, though I plan to continue doing some work through the summer.

Noah worked on measuring.

I've gotten a number of his recent worksheets from this website. 

We went on yet another nature walk through the nature reserve.

Caleb was in charge of carrying (and sitting on) the bread and apples.

The ducks in Aberdeen would come swarming. These guys aren't sure what to think of us.
Hopefully they'll warm up to the idea of having bread thrown at them.

Noah was giddy on the swing.

Cooper was a little more cautious. 

Here's a view of the countryside. We live just outside the Ring Road
which enables us to easily enjoy the city and country.

The horses wouldn't come when the boys called, so Cooper
suggested going to the water trough to feed them. Clever boy.

The Kilns - I've posted photos of CS Lewis's house before,
but I thought it looked particularly charming in the sunshine.

Graphs, Consonant Clusters, and Georgie Porgie

Noah continued reading graphs.

Cooper did a worksheet to reinforce beginning consonant clusters.

 

Caleb did another two-page spread in his nursery rhyme book.
Today's rhyme was "Georgie Porgie."

After school, Cooper caught this delightful spider.

More Fun with Math and Meet the Wesleys

We've had a tummy bug at our house, so photos from the end of last week have been delayed. Here are a few glimpses at some of the boys' activities:

Caleb spent some time outdoors while his brothers worked. 

Noah worked diligently on counting by 2s worksheets.

Cooper diligently wrote spelling words that I dictated to him.
His written spelling work is all done in a spiral notebook.

We read about the Wesleys in our church history book and then supplemented with some reading from Hymns for a Kids Heart and singing "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing."

I really liked this math activity! Noah worked on greater than/ less than using hungry alligators.

A day's worth of math

Cooper's nearly finished his math for the school year. He typically does one drill sheet (25 addition or subtraction problems) and one worksheet. He's needed very little instruction as the work is still fairly simple.
He likes working in the hall now to limit distraction.

Noah has finished his math workbooks for the school year, so I'm choosing skills to work on daily. We've been doing skip counting and odd/even. Today's lesson was a lot of fun. He was given a flashcard (1-20); bears were counted and paired (for dancing, of course!); he would sing, "Boo hoo hoo, no partner for you!" if there was an odd bear. Each number was recorded as odd or even on a chart. Finally, the even numbers were recorded, in order, on another chart in order to practice skip counting by 2s.

Caleb likes pulling out the math manipulatives.

This is what happens when dad reads a story. He's SO much more fun than me.
