Headlamps, Pictograms, etc.

Here's a quick catch-up of some of our recent activities.
Caleb's work evidently required a headlamp.

We spent a week studying Ancient China. The boys created their own pictograms.

Cooper's first page of pictograms: Fish, Mountain, Bow and Arrow, House, Sailboat, Snow-capped Mountain
Cooper reviewed words with silent letters today by using sentences divided into subject and predicate.
After reading each sentence properly, the subject and predicate were chosen at random. This was a favorite silly sentence: The crumb on the ground will save the king and queen from doom.

Eager Students

Caleb did a great job on his "b" worksheets yesterday.

Cooper's reading a Magic Tree House book. He'll record the pages read in his Reading Log.

It's all about trees and shrubs in science.

Noah was very thorough with his math work today.

Here's a close-up of all of the little bike riders he drew for his word problem.

Caleb glued blue yarn to the letter "b."

This book is super!!! It's a loaner from a friend. We've moved on from Vivaldi to Bach and read the Bach section of the book.

First Day of School 2011-2012

The Student Body: Noah (Kindergarten), Caleb (preschool), Cooper (1st grade)

Desk Work

Science was a big hit. Today we asked the question, "What does a scientist do?" All three boys are eager to be scientists this year.

After school reading...this warms my heart.

A few pictures from this week

Cooper worked on spelling words with the long-U vowel sound.
Here, he's rearranging letters to spell huge.

More work with the long-U vowel sound. The only way across the river was to jump from one long-U word to another. Caleb's not reading. He just thought the hopping was fun.

The little man is often busting out some tunes.

Bob and Ladybirds

Noah did some independent reading.

Caleb challenged me to a game of Ladybirds. He won. Legitimately.

Quiet Reading Time

Noah did a little spelling this morning before school.
He correctly spelled "jug" on the cabinet door handles.
I've instituted quiet reading time. I placed books that Cooper should be able to read without assistance (and some that Noah can read without help) in a basket. The boys can choose their books and read quietly for 30 minutes.
This guy was napping during quiet reading time.

Lots of Reading

Noah's been progressing well with his reading.

Cooper's displaying his reading record. He and Noah each have one to keep track of books they've read aloud, progress, difficulties, etc.

After school the boys picked flowers for me. Cooper arranged them in a bouquet and wrapped a ribbon (yarn) around them.
